A Rug Situation
+ LIVING ROOM REFRESH +
It all started with a rug or the lack thereof.
We all have been there, we move into a new place, and wanna feel at home quickly, now! So we buy something, but it isn’t working out.
(I totally get it, I’m super impatient myself.) However, acquiring the right pieces takes time or some help from an interior designer. That said, in general, it’s best to start with laying down a base and then over time bringing in furniture and decor that makes you happy.
Back to the rug. A rug doesn’t only add to that homey feel, it helps to define an area and essentially can make or break a room. It should be a suitable size, and the material needs to be pleasing to your feet and functional at the same time. A lot of times a rug also has to unite different tastes, work with existing furniture and come in on a budget. But don’t despair, we are here to help.
In this refresh, we helped two roommates that share a living room with a bunch of existing and having to keep items. They went out to buy a rug yet ended up with one that’s way too small for their space, and neither of them really loved it. Moreover, they weren’t happy with the coffee table either. So we suggested a more holistic approach and had a look at the whole room.
We sourced appropriate, budget-friendly rug options, refreshed, reshuffled and added a few additional, mainly decorative details.
And in the end, we surprised these young ladies, that share an apartment in Brooklyn, with not two, but four different visions.
You see a lot of it is upgrading items with new doorknobs for example or switching out that square lamp shade. Changing pillow covers, adding blankets, greenery and giving some much-needed attention to the empty walls. As well as providing some visually pleasing storage. (Two proposals even have a dedicated stage for wine ;)
Tip:
If you have some canvas art that doesn’t fit your style anymore, don’t shove it onto the streets.
Just lean it against a wall turned with it’s back to the front and layer it with a different piece of art for a casual, artistic vibe. Or if you feel creative and DIY make it your own. Dig up some inspiration on IG or Pinterest and paint over the old canvas. Bam! Fresh art for your walls for next to nothing.
